downloading and opening linked files
I am able to change the download location in firefox prefs... but when I click on a pdf file in a link and open the file in Preview, the file is downloaded to my desktop, eventhough my downloads go to 'my downloads' folder.
For example, in yahoo mail, I click on a link to a pdf or word doc, the firefox 'open...' dialog box allows me to choose to 'Open with 'Choose...'. After I press 'Choose...' and select word or preview, the file always ends up on the desktop.
If I select 'Save to Disk' for that same link, it will go to the location specified in firefox prefs, as expected.
I have tried editing about:config:', adding 'applications.tmp_dir' and the directory value, but that doesn't seem to have any affect at all.
Any ideas how I can set the 'Open with Choose...' download location???

Just like Google Chrome, Firefox web browser too saves downloaded files to the main “Downloads” folder of the user account. However, it is easy to change the Default Downloads Folder Location in Firefox and to make Firefox browser save downloaded files to your desktop or to any other location on your computer.

Luckily, it is really easy to change Firefox Downloads Folder location on your computer and make Firefox web browser to download files to your Computer’s Desktop or any other location on your computer by following the steps below.
How To Change Download Location In Firefox Mac Version
1. Open Firefox Web Browser on your Computer.
2. Click on the 3-bar Firefox Menu button, located at the upper-right corner of your screen (See image below).
3. From the drop-down menu click on the Options tab. (See image above)
4. On the next screen, click on General tab in the sidebar menu (in case you are not already on that tab).
5. Under section Downloads, click on the circle next to Save Files to and choose the new Downloads Folder Location by clicking on Browse (See image above).
6. Once you click on Browser…, you will be taken to “Choose Download Folder” screen (See image below). On this screen you can click on Desktop to make Firefox save downloads to your desktop.
As you can see in the image above, you can also make Firefox save files to a Folder on your desktop and practically to any location on your computer. You can even make Firefox save download files to a USB Drive or to an External Hard Drive attached to your computer.
Make Firefox Ask Where to Save Downloaded Files
While downloading files to desktop makes them immediately view-able, it can also make your desktop cluttered in case you do not take any action on downloaded files (move to a relevant folder or delete)
Hence, another option that you may like is to make Firefox ask you where to save downloaded files. Every time you download a file from the internet, Firefox will ask you to choose a location for the downloaded file.
1. Open Firefox Web Browser on your Computer.
2. Click on the 3-bar Firefox Menu button, located at the upper-right corner of your screen (See image below).
3. From the drop-down menu click on the Options tab. (See image above)
4. On the next screen, click on General tab in the sidebar menu (in case you are not already on that tab).
5. Under section Downloads, click on the circle next to Always ask me where to save files
How To Download Firefox On Windows
After this setting, Firefox will be prompting you to indicate a location for the downloaded file, every time you try to download anything from the internet.
How To Change Download Location Firefox
In case you are not sure you can still direct Firefox to save the downloaded file to Desktop or direct Firefox to save the file to specific folders like Images, Music and PDF’s that you can create on your computer to store and manage downloaded files.
